Aciman's tales of loss and longing invade the senses before they can begin to be judged by intellect. At that moment, he became binational and bicultural, not just a Mexican-American, but a Jewish Mexican-American. Or was he now a Mexican-American Jew? Once he made the decision to find his voice "in a language and habitat not my own," he had to forge an identity as well, for if not by our words, then how else do we define ourselves?

And in what better city than New York to do it, where "polyglotism is a common characteristic. In New York he found his true home; in foreign words, his true identity. His memoir is all about the words and languages that bilingualists borrow and then keep, and also how, through literature we love, we can journey to the heart of ourselves. Brenda Serotte is a poet and translator of Ladino whose memoir pieces about growing up Sephardic in the Bronx have been published in various literary journals and anthologies.

Linguistic change may occur for a variety of reasons, but such reasons are usually connected to what we call the ethnolinguistic factor. In the history of a language we will find a succession of layers called strata.

When speaking of a family or subfamily of languages, the stratum is usually rather uniform, in spite of its geographical variations, so it is a cohesive factor between the languages of that families, it is the main reason for the similarities that exist between such languages. Nevertheless, the substratum and the adstratum or adstrata are diverse, so they are the main reason for the differences between related languages.

The ethnolinguistic factor is a sum of social, cultural, mental, psychological and linguistic characteristics of the substratum. This factor contains two main aspects: the psychological basis and the phonological basis.

  • Guardian of the Presidency: The Legacy of Richard E. Neustadt?
  • False friends.
  • Science of Breath.

On the one hand, the phonological basis concerns the auditory and articulatory habits of the speakers, so it usually causes linguistic changes of the formal unity of words. On the other hand, the psychological basis refers to the way speakers of an ethnic group perceive and adapt linguistic reality to the extralinguistic one, thus causing changes in language so that it matches the cultural approach of the community. The psychological basis is responsible mostly for semantic changes, but it may also affect the form of the words.

With this in mind we want to underline that the false friends issue affects all pairs of languages involved in translations.

We consider it useful to let translators and specifically future translators know that is possible to find partial or total false friends when translating Polish into Spanish. We also want to provide a typology and a preliminary list that could be completed by translators.

Questi errori derivano dal fatto che una coppia di espressioni in entrambe le lingue abbia la stessa o simile forma grafica o fonica, ma il significato diverso.

Cercheremo allora di rispondere, prima di tutto, come identificare i falsi amici; se tutte le espressioni di fonia o di scrittura simile sono i falsi amici; se questo problema vale per solo una coppia di parole in due lingue? The present study focuses on false friends —words with a similar form but different meanings— in both English and Spanish. Ten pairs of false friends have been analysed, paying special attention to their etymologies and their semantic Ten pairs of false friends have been analysed, paying special attention to their etymologies and their semantic derivations produced from their common etyma up to their current definitions in each language.

The selected terms are some lesser studied forms, due to their less frequent use or to their dealing with a taboo meaning. In addition, with help of etymological dictionaries, these forms are presented from a diachronic perspective, scarcely studied and barely resorted to in language teaching traditionally.

Nevertheless, in this paper it is argued that the diachronic approach is the best way to understand these words synchronically and hence it is desirable to avoid their study by heart in form of lists. In the search for a link between both languages, an explanation for the meanings of these words has been found, and with it, a significant method by which to make an easier and more effective acquisition or learning. The focal issue of the paper is the stylistic parameter of phraseological units discussed from a cross-linguistic perspective.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the stylistic value of fixed expression in terms of interlingual The aim of the paper is to discuss the stylistic value of fixed expression in terms of interlingual equivalence. The problem will be discussed on the example of selected expressions.

It is confered that such structures called as false friends result in mistakes and make understanding difficult. Almost all the studies of false friends on dialects are about words. In some of these studies, false friends issue in morphemes is discussed as well. Besides, it is possible to discuss false friends issue in phrases and idioms. However, there is not a distinct study on that issue up to this point. Additionally, false friends issue is not discussed in studies about mistakes in idiom transmissions.

We're taking a whole new approach.

Misunderstanding of idioms which are prolongations of culture causes communication disorder and leads us misinterpret customs, beliefs, worldview, lifestyle and way of thinking of a society. In the studies of Tatar and Turkey Turkic, false friend idioms are especially pointed out as part of the research in order to prevent the problems occuring in transfer. In this respect, the issue is; 1. The ones whose components are same in terms of sound and structure; or the ones composed of the words which are known to be from the mutual root with regular sound balance between origin dialect and target dialect; namely idioms composed of heteronym components.
